Asked what he hoped to achieve of this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, Aaron Betsky replied: “To astonish and amaze”. He succeeds. “Out There: Architecture Beyond Building” (until Nov. 23; www.labiennale.org) opens in the Arsenal with a parade of “starchitect” installations -visionary, fantastic creations that push the boundaries of architecture.
Frank Gehry’s Ungapatchket, a wooden tower with curved panels covered in clay, is both a design for a contemporary Moscow hotel and a throwback to the plaster-and-wood molds used for the Statue of Liberty. It’s dramatic, back-to-basics statement by the maestro of high-tech spectacle. The Spanish studio of Guallart Architects takes the opposite approach, presenting a Hyperhabitat of household objects embedded with micro servers that digitally communicate with each other.
But whether sci-fi of low-tech, the future of architecture is still, in seems, about people. Landscape artist Kathryn Gustafson offers up Towards Paradise, a lush oasis that stands as an allegory for the human condition. “It’s not Utopia,” explains Betsky. “It’s a garden you can sit in. A concrete paradise.” That, surely, is the ultimate architectural vision.

MADRID.- “Hyperhabitat. Reprogramando el mundo” es el nombre de la instalación, obra de un equipo liderado por el arquitecto Vicente Guallart, que representará a España en la Bienal de Venecia , y que integra los elementos típicos de un hogar, hechos en metacrilato, y conectados a internet gracias a un microservidor.
Una paella, una lavadora, camisetas, sillas, una televisión, libros, un crucifijo o un simple frutero son algunas de las decenas de piezas que conforman esta propuesta que se verá en la cita veneciana (del 14 de septiembre al 23 de noviembre): una “casa prototipo”, a escala 1:1, “hermana” de un edificio real de viviendas para jóvenes con espacios compartidos, que se está construyendo en Gandía (Valencia) en colaboración con el Ministerio de la Vivienda.
Guallart ha sido el único arquitecto español seleccionado para participar en el ‘Arsenale’, el principal pabellón de la Bienal, y lo hará junto a arquitectos internacionales de la talla de Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Zaha Hadid, Massimiliano Fuksas, MVRDV o Ben Van Berkel. [Read more →]
